Vocational & Supported Employment Services

The Human Development Council offers a variety of vocational training opportunities within our centers as well as out in the local community.  The goal of our vocational service program is to provide vocational skills training in "real life" job settings that will allow the consumer to reach his/her true potential.  We are also committed to instilling a sense of accomplishment and self-worth to our consumers by providing the opportunity to earn a paycheck during the work training process.

The following is a list of vocational programs available through WCHDC:

  • AT YOUR SERVICE:  This is a Supported Employment program that offers lawn, landscaping, janitorial, outdoor maintenance and vending machine commercial services to all residential and business customers throughout the Tri-state area. Job coaches are assigned to mobile work crews that travel throughout the area performing various jobs.

  •  CENTER STREET Market  Located on Center Street in the west end of Hagerstown, this neighborhood restaurant  serves homemade breakfast and lunch dishes to its customers. The market is a State licensed vocational training site where  individuals have the opportunity to learn the skills of the "business's, in addition to earning a paycheck for their services. "Corner  Consignments" is the market's newest offshoot pairing tow forms of retail training under one roof.

  • Individual Community Placement WCHDC offers its vocational participants the opportunity to work within the community. We assist the individual with resume preparation, interview skills training, and assist them in locating potential employers. Once hired, we pair a job coach with he individual until he/she feels comfortable in tier new job setting to work on tier own. We also provide ongoing monitoring with in the employment setting and provide job skills counseling to further enhance the successful job placement.

  • COMMERCIAL CONTRACT PROGRAM:  This "in-center" vocational program offers compensated work training processing thousands of pieces of mail and small parts each month for a variety of business customers.  Under the guidance of our Work Program Supervisor, consumers learn both job-specific and general work skills.  This program operates out of our Hagerstown center.

  •  JANITORIAL SERVICES:  Offered at both our Hagerstown and Frederick centers, this program teaches basic janitorial skills with emphasis on cleaning in a work environment while providing consumers a paycheck for their services to the center.
